This I thought was an interesting find from the bargain bin that I came across during my travels through the great American countryside, at a lonely gas station with a lonely gas station clerk. I dug around endlessly in the bargain bin and found this can of American snuff from Levi Garret that jumped out at me. I got it for four bucks and took it home with me...
I've never tried American snuff before, but I believe it to be a fine cut dip, not a nasal snuff as I would normally consider the name "snuff" to represent. This was a bit moist, but certainly drier than any other dips I've had, it was quite hard to pinch, and I tried using a spoon to scoop some into my mouth before that failed miserably. This is not an easy pinch, especially for a beginner like myself...
Either way, the smell that hit my nose was of leather and manure, barnyard and stable, like planet Earth if you could smell it from space. When I say manure I mean it in the best way possible... The appearance was that of compost, and the taste was of raw, smokey tobacco. I enjoyed the lack of flavoring and the raw tobacco taste. Not sweetened at all like most other dipping tobaccos, actually reminded me of how that W.E. Garret dry snuff tasted a bit, without the sweetness. The closest thing I could compare it to would be the WB Long Cut Chewing Tobacco I reviewed on the YouTube channel. It had sort of a barbecue like flavor behind the tobacco taste. There was not much of a burn, certainly not as much as you would get with wintergreen dips. The nicotine content seemed fairly high for the amount I took. I believe this is due to the finer cut increasing absorption.
Overall, a pleasant experience, raw and unfiltered. Easy to take, not an overpowering flavor, just salty tobacco. It may be boring if you are someone who enjoys flavored dips. But it certainly was not bad for me.
